Stephen Ball is Distinguished Service Professor of Sociology of Education at UCL Institute of Education where, until August 2015, he was Karl Mannheim Professor of Sociology of Education. He is also Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Education, University of Oxford. His first degree was in Sociology at the University of Essex, and his MA and PhD were done at Sussex, where he was supervised by Colin Lacey. He worked for 10 years at Sussex, for 16 at King’s College London, and joined the Institute of Education in 2001. He has been Managing Editor of the Journal of Education Policy since 1985.
In 2003 he was awarded Doctor honoris causa from the University of Turku, Finland and in 2014 an Honorary D. Litt from the University of Leicester. In 2006 he was elected Fellow of the British Academy and in 2015 as Laureate of Kappa Delta Phi, and Fellow of the Society of Educational Studies.
