Research summary

My research area is the interface between synthetic polymer chemistry and colloid science. My research group makes long-chain molecules (polymers) in the form of microscopic particles (less than one-thousandth of a millimetre in diameter). Our work has practical applications in many commercial sectors, including improved paints and coatings, more efficient delivery of fragrances for laundry formulations, better engine oil additives for viscosity control, more robust immunodiagnostic assays for point-of-care use, gene therapy and space science. A significant fraction of our work is simply fundamental 'curiosity-driven' science, but we also work closely with a range of large and small industrial companies who provide us with technically challenging objectives and 'real life' problems.
