Extreme natural hazards
Organised by Professor Herbert Huppert FRS and Professor Steve Sparks FRS
This meeting will focus on extreme geophysical and astrophysical hazards, including earthquakes, super volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, near Earth Objects and giant landslides. Internationally-renowned speakers will discuss the frontiers and challenges in the science of extreme natural hazards as well as related topics such as prediction, forecasting, monitoring and technological innovations.
The meeting will assess the role of the international scientific community and how these efforts can be better co-ordinated, integrated and funded to improve the ability to anticipate and mitigate the effects of extreme events. Issues of the accessibility of relevant science to poor nations with limited scientific infrastructure and expertise will also be discussed.
