Can we build a quantum computer?

05 June 2015 16:30 - 17:30

Speakers explored potential applications of the quantum world at the Cheltenham Science Festival.

What would happen if the strange quantum behaviour of atoms could be harnessed into a computer?

A machine using atoms to store information could, in theory, solve problems that would take a modern PC the age of the universe to complete – but can it be done? Quantum physicists Gavin Morley, Winfried Hensinger and Elham Kashefi discussed whether the theory of quantum computing will ever become a reality.

This event was part of The Times Cheltenham Science Festival 2015.
