Communicating statistics in the time of Covid
Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been exposed to more data and statistics than ever before. With decisions affecting everyone’s lives being made based on this data, understanding it has never been more important. Whether it’s to inform our own personal risk or the policy decisions made to reduce the spread and impact of Covid, the responsibility to ensure that the data is interpreted and communicated in an objective and clear way has never been greater.
Professor David Spiegelhalter, Chair of the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication in the University of Cambridge, joins Tim Harford, columnist, broadcaster and author of How To Make The World Add Up in conversation about his current work focusing on communicating statistics, risk and evidence during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This event is the Michael Faraday Prize Lecture 2020 awarded to Professor David Spiegelhalter OBE FRS for bringing key insights from the disciplines of statistics and probability vividly home to the public at large, and to key decision-makers, in entertaining and accessible ways, most recently through the Covid-19 pandemic.
