What happens when there's too much water?
This event is part of the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition 2023.
Professor Hannah Cloke (University of Reading) talks about what inspired her to become a flooding specialist. She explores how scientists use super computers, working with millions of pieces of data, to provide global forecasting models for all the major rivers on earth. Grouping these models together increases certainty about all the different elements - about where and when rain will fall, the most likely flood scenarios and the worst-case scenarios. And these predictions can help governments and citizens to prepare for the impact of flooding before they happen and to save lives and livelihoods.
