Lates: Unveiling a universe full of black holes

01 July 2025 18:15 - 18:45 The Royal Society Free Watch online
Detailed Picture of a Night Sky Full of Stars

This event is part of the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition 2025.

Supermassive black holes weighing millions to billions of times the mass of our Sun, are among the most fascinating astronomical sources in our Universe. In recent years astronomers have discovered that these black holes, far from being rare phenomena, are in fact everywhere we look.

Join Professor Manda Banerji, Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Southampton, as she explores how modern telescopes are uncovering these cosmic giants and what they reveal about galaxy formation and evolution. Turning back to Earth, she will also highlight the power of global collaboration, interdisciplinary research, and diverse perspectives in driving technological innovation and groundbreaking discoveries in astrophysics.

Discover how our understanding of the Universe is being transformed by new tools, ideas, and the people behind them.
