Lates: How do plants know when to grow up?

This event is part of the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition 2025.
Developmental biology seeks to understand how organisms transition through their life cycles, from single cell embryos to towering oaks. For plants – rooted in place and unable to move – this journey is particularly fascinating. Rather than running away from trouble or migrating with the seasons, plants adapt by constantly produce new organs using wonderfully flexible patterns of growth.
Join Royal Society Research Fellow Dr Jim Fouracre to explore what makes plant biology so unique, and delve into his research on a key question in plant development: how do plants know when to move from one life stage to the next? After all, plants go through difficult phases too.
