This event is part of the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition 2025.

You might have never heard of mixoplankton before, but they are survivors battling their way through the sunlit ocean and here’s your chance to hear their story and watch them in action. Dr Aditee Mitra, member of the UK Young Academy, is a marine ecologist, specialising in predator-prey interactions in plankton food-webs, using laboratory experiments and mathematical models.

Once thought to be simple, plant-like organisms, many microalgae are known to be predators too. These so-called mixoplanton entrap, harpoon, dissolve or suck out the contents of their prey, with some even stealing parts from others to photosynthesise. Join us to discover these remarkable creatures reshaping our understanding of ocean life.
