My research involves development of theory, methodology and applications of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).
For a long time I had a nomadic existence with numerous postdoc positions in several countries. It settled down after marrying Latha and moving long term to Sweden (10 years) and then UK. Fortunately Sweden provided a very good environment for bringing up a child compatible with a research career for both myself and Latha. The UK would be horrendous in comparison since the childcare is atrociously expensive and comparatively bad and inflexible. In Sweden I could also take parental leave which I took for six weeks (if I recall). Latha and I could have shared 18 months parental leave between us. As far as career/family issues are concerned Latha has made most of the compromises and I have got off lightly.
