The Council of the Royal Society established a working group in December 1996 to undertake a scoping study on the status of the science needed for management of civil plutonium in the UK. The Working Group examined current practice with regard to plutonium production and disposal and reviewed the technical options, currently available or under development, for managing or using plutonium separated from spent fuel by reprocessing.
