PMSU: UK Fisheries

01 August 2003

Difficulties in developing and enforcing regulation have led to many UK and European fish stocks to be significantly overexploited.

In August 2003 the Royal Society submitted a response to the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit consultation on the UK Fisheries. In the response, the Society urged European Governments to reduce fishing effort whilst addressing any social and economic consequences.

The response stressed that politicians should implement more enforceable regulations that incorporate fishing quotas, which are further based on sound science rather than at levels set for the benefit of short-term political gain.
