Potential health, environmental and societal impacts of nanotechnologies (2nd workshop)

21 December 2006

As part of its ongoing activities on the subject of nanotechnologies, the Royal Society has held two workshops exploring the potential health, environmental and societal impacts of nanotechnologies jointly with the Science Council of Japan. The second workshop was held in Tokyo on 23 February 2006 and was attended by scientists and policy makers from the UK and Japan.

This workshop focussed on the research priorities for reducing the uncertainty around the health and environmental impacts of manufactured nanoparticles. Participants discussed research needs relating to the measurement and characterisation of nanoparticles. The results of recent research on the potential health and environmental impacts were presented and bilateral collaboration was discussed. The report of the workshop summarises discussions at the meeting and highlights some relevant initiatives being undertaken in Japan and the United Kingdom.
