Consultation response: submission to the Commons Science and Technology Committee inquiry into the Science Budget

01 September 2015

The Commons Science and Technology Committee is holding an inquiry into the UK science budget ahead of the spending review.

The Society has written to the Committee to highlight that research brings broad benefits for society, contributing to the health and wealth of the UK, and demonstrate that scientific excellence is one of the UK’s strengths and as such should be nurtured and developed.

The submission illustrates the role of public investment in underpinning the UK’s research and innovation ecosystem, which attracts further investment from businesses, charities and overseas, and calls on the government to increase its investment in R&D to at least match the OECD average of 0.67% of GDP by 2020.
