National Academy Presidents write to new Prime Minister

24 July 2019

The Presidents of the UK's four National Academies have written to the new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to congratulate him on his appointment, and highlight the value of research and innovation to society.

The letter urges the new Prime Minister to give his full support to the commitment of increasing investment in R&D to 2.4% by 2027, with a longer-term aim of 3%. It also highlights the international nature of research and innovation and the importance of openness and collaboration.

The Presidents also call on the new Prime Minister to seek the closest achievable association to Horizon Europe (the EU's next research and innovation programme) and highlight the considerable damage a no-deal Brexit could pose to research and innovation in the UK.
