Maintaining a strong pipeline of postgraduate research (PGR) students is essential not just for the sustainability of the research base but the UK’s future as a knowledge economy striving for high skill, high productivity employment and inward investment. The Royal Society's response to the New Deal for PGR consultation offers views and recommendations on the goals for contemporary PGR training, current models for supervision, support for PGR students entering careers in outside academia, rights and conditions, and fees and funding.
